Golfweek Ranks Great Bear Golf and Country Club the No. 4 Best Public Access Course in Pennsylvania
Jack Nicklaus-Designed Gem is Located in the Heart of Northeastern Pennsylvania’s Family Friendly Golf Area, ‘Pocono Mountains: Discover Golf’s Great Destination Secret’
(March 16th 2006) (POCONO MOUNTAINS, Pennsylvania) – The Pocono Mountains Vacation Bureau, Inc. (PMVB, Inc.) today announces that Great Bear Golf and Country Club in East Stroudsburg has been named Pennsylvania’s No. 4 course in Golfweek’s 11th annual, state-by-state ranking of “America’s Best Courses.”
Great Bear is a modern design masterpiece by a modern design master. Forced carries, huge greens and Mr. Nicklaus’ signature left-to-right shot routing are prevalent throughout. High fade shots are particularly preferred on the testing par-3s, two of which measure a meaty 222 and 199 yards, respectively, from the Black Tees (back tees, 74.8 rating, 142 slope). Both of those one-shotters are on the back nine, not coincidentally, as the challenges build in intensity as the round progresses.
“Great Bear is a great golf and lifestyle experience in the Pocono Mountains golf destination,” says Robert Uguccioni, executive director of the PMVB, Inc. “Great Bear is one reason why the Pocono Mountains golf destination is increasingly being selected by golfers for their next vacation.”
Great Bear boasts the only Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course in the region. Jack Nicklaus and his team individually sculptured each of the course’s 18 holes through the thick forest landscape with no parallel fairways.
The course features beautiful vistas of the Pocono Mountains, generous ball landing areas, contoured greens, strategic bunkering and challenging elevation changes.
This is the latest distinction for Great Bear. Golf Digest recently ranked Great Bear among the top 20 courses in Pennsylvania. It has also been listed in Golf for Women magazine as one of the top 100 women-friendly courses in the country, and Great Bear is a proud host of a Nationwide Tour Qualifier.
