PGA TOUR Player Doug Barron and Proderma’s ‘Cool Kids Wear Sunscreen’ Campaign Hit Valero Texas Open
(September 21st 2005) Sunscreen Donations Benefit First Tee of San Antonio
(SAN ANTONIO, Texas) – PGA TOUR player Doug Barron and Proderma today announce they will donate sunscreen to the First Tee of San Antonio through “Proderma’s Cool Kids Wear Sunscreen” campaign, commensurate with Barron’s performance in the Valero Texas Open, held September 22-25 at La Cantera Golf Club.
Year-to-date, Barron has competed in 15 TOUR events via the campaign, pledging donations of more than 9,700 units of Proderma sunscreen to local youth charities and junior golf programs. His best finish came at the EDS Byron Nelson in May, where finished tied for third and donated 1,000 units of sunscreen to the Dallas Chapter of the First Tee Program.
To lend visibility to the campaign, Barron will wear the “Proderma’s Cool Kids Wear Sunscreen” logo on his headwear, and skin-cancer prevention and related information will be distributed on the tournament grounds. Barron will also make himself available to local television, print and radio media to discuss the Cool Kids Wear Sunscreen campaign, its educational goals and potential impact.
“I am excited to introduce the Cool Kids Wear Sunscreen campaign to young persons and junior golfers in the San Antonio area,” Barron says. “This area of the country receives strong UVA and UVB rays throughout the year, and it is important we educate local youths about the importance of wearing sunscreen.”
Barron, a native of Memphis, is a longtime advocate of protection from the sun’s harmful rays. He is a champion of youth related charities and causes, and regularly donates his time and money to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital and Le Bonheur Medical Center. Barron believes convincing youths that applying sunscreen before all outdoor activities is the “cool” thing to do is the key to ensuring the health and longevity of generations to come.

About Doug Barron and the Proderma Cool Kids Wear Sunscreen Campaign
Having turned professional in 1992, Barron rejoined the PGA TOUR this season after tying for 26th at Qualifying School in 2004. He is off to a solid start in 2005, finishing fifth at the Chrysler Classic of Tucson and making the cut at the Ford Championship at Doral and the Honda Classic.
Known as an accurate driver of the golf ball and a solid ball-striker, Barron’s best finish on TOUR is a tie for fourth at the 2000 Air Canada Championship. He played on the PGA TOUR from 1997 through 2001 and in 2003, and on the Nationwide Tour for four years. Last year, he recorded seven top-10 finishes, including a tie for second at the Samsung Canadian PGA.
Throughout his playing career, Barron has remained true to his hometown, his beliefs, his family and his friends. Those who know him are quick to point out that his dedication to local charities and youth programs never waivers, despite his performance level and earnings in the professional golf arena.
A staggering one in five Americans develops skin cancer, and each year one million new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in the U.S. Educating junior golfers, specifically, and children under the age of 18 in general about skin protection is key, considering:
-- one serious incidence of sunburn during childhood can cause irreversible skin damage that may double the probability of contracting a life-threatening skin ailment later in life;
-- by the age of 18, most people have received 80 percent of their lifetime sun exposure; and
-- regular application of sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 during the first 18 years of life can significantly lower the risk of some types of skin cancer by more than 75 percent.
For the “Proderma’s Cool Kids Wear Sunscreen” campaign, Proderma makes available its SPF 30 Toweletts. The Toweletts feature Proderma’s cutting-edge compilation of natural ingredients that absorb, block and scatter harmful UVA and UVB rays more effectively than other sunscreens on the market today. All Toweletts adhere to medical testing and have received the Skin Cancer Recommended Seal of performance.
Proderma’s alcohol-and-oil-free formulas prevent the skin from drying, and its proprietary formulas are developed over extensive periods of time by leading chemists and require considerable financial resources to perfect. All formulas contain high-end ingredients that contribute to the lotion spreading outward from the area of application for the widest skin coverage of any sunscreen ever developed.
Proderma products are so advanced that PGA Tour players and everyday golfers actually see them working seconds after application. Golfers particularly praise Proderma’s competition-grade Prism Sunscreen, a quick-drying, greaselessness formula that prevents club slippage, enhances grip, and lasts up to eight hours at an SPF of over 35. Prism is odorless, sweat and water resistant, easy and smooth to apply, withstands the harsh weather conditions in which golfers play, and discourages insects.
About Proderma Sun & Skin Care Products
Proderma products deliver optimal protection from exposure to sun and wind, anytime, anywhere, as well as the everyday effects of aging. All ingredients used were carefully chosen to blend the best of cosmetic, herbal, and scientific knowledge. Nutritive, restorative herbal extracts promote skin conditioning and natural moisturizing. Antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E help to protect skin against the cumulative effects of sun exposure. Allantoin, tree tee oil, and ginseng help speed the skin's natural healing process.
Designed to promote secure gripping of clubs through their natural, non-greasy ingredients, Proderma’s golfer-specific products represent a major breakthrough in on-course sunscreen application. They are odorless, discourage insects and provide 24-hour preventative and therapeutic protection and skin-cell replenishment. Proderma’s 13-product line includes SPF 30+ Prism ABS-ZN45 Sunscreen, SPF 30 Sunscreen, Windscreen, Hand Lotion, SPF 18 Facial Moisturizer, SPF 18 Body Lotion, SPF 30 Lip Balm, SPF 30 Face Stick, Burn Gel, and Moonscreen (works overnight for morning tee times).
Featuring the only sunscreens for golfers to earn the Skin Cancer Foundation Seal of Recommendation for safety and effectiveness, Proderma products have passed a series of stringent scientific examinations. This is critical given the substantial time golfers are exposed to the sun’s damaging rays and other outdoor elements that lead to more than $1 billion spent annually on skin-cancer surgery
