Castle & Cooke Names Al Martell Vice President of Golf Properties at The Experience of Koele and The Challenge at Manele

Industry Veteran to Oversee Golf Operations at Two of the World’s Highest-Rated Resorts

(BAKERSFIELD, Calif.) – Castle & Cooke today announces that industry veteran Al Martell has been named Vice President of Golf Properties at two of the world’s highest-rated resort courses, The Experience of Koele and The Challenge at Manele, located on the breathtaking Hawaiian island of Lana’i.

Martell, a former executive with Dallas-based ClubCorp, currently oversees golf operations for Castle & Cooke’s highly-regarded California portfolio, which includes award-winning Saddle Creek Resort in Copperopolis, Coyote Creek outside of San Jose and Seven Oaks in Bakersfield.

Designed by golf legend Greg Norman and esteemed golf course architect Ted Robinson, The Experience of Koele offers stunning views of mountains and lush greens, with the Pacific Ocean in the distance. A cool climate, wooded slopes, manicured bunkers and terraced water hazards, the course begins on a plateau nearly 2,000 feet above sea level, with sweeping views of Maui and Moloka'i across the ocean channel. The front nine moves dramatically through ravines wooded with pine, koa and eucalyptus trees, and seven lakes and flowing streams with cascading waterfalls dot the entire course. No other course offers a more incredible combination of highland terrain, inspired landscape architecture and range of play challenges.

Perched atop 200-foot cliffs, The Challenge at Manele offers dramatic views of the Pacific Ocean from all 18 holes. Lush, green fairways are bordered by black lava outcroppings -- reminders of the ancient volcanic origins of Lana'i. High above the crashing surf of Hulopo'e Bay, The Challenge at Manele is breathtaking layout widely considered to be one of Jack Nicklaus’ best designs. Built on lava outcroppings, the course features three holes on cliffs which effectively use the Pacific Ocean as a water hazard. The five-tee concept challenges the best golfers – tee shots over natural gorges and ravines must be precise. During the winter, golfers can catch spectacular sightings of whales right from the fairways.

Says Martell: “I am excited and honored to join the dynamic enterprising team at The Experience at Koele and The Challenge at Manele. These world-class properties provide guests with outstanding golf, food and accommodations, and I look forward to building on that foundation.”

Castle & Cooke recently engaged with Four Seasons to manage the Four Seasons Resort Lana’i at Manele Bay and the Lodge at Koele. Four Seasons Resort Lana'i at Manele Bay features a 236-room luxury hotel perched atop a rugged red-lava cliff above a white-sand beach. Guests have access to a destination-level spa and dynamic recreational adventures set amidst pristine, natural landscapes. The Lodge at Koele houses 102 guest rooms and suites adorned with hand-carved poster beds, ceiling fans and fireplaces. Secluded within the dramatic central highlands, The Lodge provides guests a gracious retreat set against manicured gardens. Under Castle & Cooke’s guidance, both properties are undergoing more than $70 million in enhancements.
